Year 10 & 11 Travel & Tourism

BTEC Level 1/2 First Award in Travel and Tourism

The course comprises of 4 units which will be taught during the course of years 10 and 11, with assessment being carried out at the end of each unit. The aim of the course is to increase student knowledge about their own country and the world around them.

Unit 1: The UK Travel and Tourism

Learning Aim A: Understand the UK travel and tourism sector and its importance to the UK economy.  The following will be covered:

  • The types of tourism
  • The types of travel
  • The principles of sustainable tourism
  • The importance of the travel and tourism sector to the UK economy

Learning Aim B: Know about the industries and key organisations, within the travel and tourism sector, their roles and interrelationships.  The following will be covered:

  • Industries in the travel and tourism sector
  • ·Key organisations in the travel and tourism sector
  • Types of organisation in the travel and tourism sector
  • The interrelationships between travel and tourism organisations

Learning Aim C: Understand the role of consumer technology in the travel and tourism sector

This unit is externally assessed by exam.  The windows for sitting the exam are January and June.  There is an opportunity for ONE resit. 

Unit 2: UK Travel and Tourism Destinations

Learning Aim A: Know UK travel and tourism destinations and gateways. The following will be covered:

  • UK travel and tourism categories (capitals, seaside, countryside, cultural/historical)
  • UK gateway airports and UK seaports
  • Road and rail travel
  • Examples of UK travel

Learning Aim B: Investigate the appeal of UK tourism destinations for different types of visitor.  The following will be covered:

  • Appeal of UK destinations
  • Types of visitor
  • Increasing appeal

Learning Aim C: Plan UK holidays to meet the needs of different visitors.  The following will be covered:

  • Sources of information
  • UK holiday planning

This unit is internally assessed.  There are 3 assignments contributing to the final mark

Unit 3: The Travel and Tourism Customer Experience

Learning Aim A: Investigate travel and tourism customer service.  The following will be covered:

  • What is ‘customer service’?
  • Different organisations in the travel and tourism industry

Learning Aim B: Explore the needs and expectations of different types of customer in the travel and tourism sector.  The following will be covered:

  • Customer types
  • Needs of different types of customer
  • Responding to customer needs
  • Exploring expectations of different types of customer in the travel and tourism sector

Learning Aim C: Understand the importance service to travel and tourism organisations.  The following will be covered:

  • Customer service
  • Impact of excellent and poor customer service on travel and tourism organisations

This unit is internally assessed.  There are 3 assignments contributing to the final mark

Unit 4: International Travel and Tourism Destinations

Learning Aim A: Know the major international travel and tourism destinations and gateways.  The following will be covered:

  • International destinations
  • Major getaways
  • Types of destination
  • Examples of international travel routes

Learning Aim B: Investigate the appeal of international travel and tourism destinations to different types of visitorThe following will be covered:

  • Features (natural features/local attractions/accommodation/facilities and services/cultural features/special interest tourism)
  • Types of visitor

Learning Aim C: Be able to plan international travel to meet the needs of visitor.
