Year 9



In addition, Y9 will have one lesson per fortnight in which they will be introduced to the expectations of the GCSE English Language papers and begin to practise the skills needed for these.


These usually take place at the end of each unit. Students will be informed about the dates of these assessments. Marks for each assessment focus are recorded on G4S. All assessments are closed book.


 Britain at War 1

Study a diverse anthology of First World War poetry. Discuss how attitudes to war were presented and compare different poets’ attitudes and thoughts.

Literature – class assessment

Analyse and compare the way Wilfred Owen (‘Dulce et Decorum est’) and Rupert Brooke (‘The Soldier’).

 Britain at War 2

Read a novel set in WW2. As well as appreciating the impact of war on individuals, you will consider how narratives are crafted and learn the different elements needed to write a successful short story.

Writing – hall exam

Write one piece of narrative writing.


 Comedy in Context

Learn about the origins of many of the comedies popular today. As well as studying the Shakespeare play ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ in its entirety, you will study a range of extracts from comedies of the Elizabethan era.

Literature – hall exam

An ‘exploding extract’ question based on one of the key scenes you have studied. The question will focus on the relationship between Benedick and Beatrice.


 Prejudice and Discrimination

Study either ‘Of Mice and Men’ (John Steinbeck) or ‘To Kill  a Mockingbird’ (Harper Lee). Consider how and why prejudice and discrimination is evident in your specified text. Become confident in commenting on character,  theme and context.

In your fortnightly GCSE preparation lessons, you will be learning how to construct letters for different audiences and purposes.

At the beginning of the final half term there will be two end of KS3 assessments:

Literature – hall exam

1) An ‘exploding extract’ question on the  novel you have studied

Writing – class assessment

2) Write a formal OR informal letter (class assessment)
