Introduction

The pages accessible from this section of the Soham Village College website are designed to help Year 9 students and their parents/carers make option choices for Key Stage 4 in Years 10 and 11.

All parents have been sent a copy of the options form which needs to be returned to school via form tutors by Monday 25 February 2013.
Pathways

There are three pathways available to students. The Options Form which has been sent home will indicate the recommended pathway. Further information on each of the pathways is available by clicking the link below:-

Types of Courses

The options cover several different types of course, variety is offered to ensure that all students are able to follow an appropriate curriculum. Courses available include traditional GCSEs and BTECs.
Setting in Years 10 and 11

Setting will occur in English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, Physical Education, French and Spanish. All other classes will be of mixed ability.
Making Options

There are plenty of teachers who will be able to give advice about options choices including Mr Stanford, Mr Poyser, Form Tutors, Subject Teachers, Heads of Subjects/Faculties and Mr Hampson.

Questions about specific courses are best addressed to subject staff. Mr Poyser will be able to advise SEN students while Mr Stanford, Form Tutors and Mr Hampson will be well placed to deal with general enquiries.

General advice always encourages students to focus on subjects they enjoy and subjects which they are good at! The choices of friends should not be taken into consideration.

If the preferred option choices are not available or if you have a general comment on the options process, please complete the comments box on the options form.
Administration

While every effort is made to give all students their first choices, it is not always possible. Some subjects may not run because of a shortage of students and conversely some may be oversubscribed. We always aim to deal with these situations in the fairest possible manner but no options can be guaranteed.

We also check that students have picked appropriate courses giving a broad and balanced curriculum.

If any amendments are made to subject choices, this will always be done in consultation with students and parents will be fully informed. We will notify students and parents when all options have been finalised.
