    Level 1

    This is a very practical course for students who may find a full suite of GCSEs difficult. They will be given an opportunity to acquire knowledge and understanding of the skills needed for the world of work in a vocational setting. Throughout the course the students will be given opportunities to engage in learning that is relevant to them. They will be able to develop a range of skills and techniques as well as develop their own skills and attributes, all of which are essential for success in working life. 

    They will achieve a range of nationally recognised level 1 vocational related qualifications that will enable them to either progress into employment or to 6th Form College.


    Grading for BTEC is 100% coursework and students will study a range of modules across a wide range of subject areas. Subject content is amended according to the needs of students. Examples of units that students have studied in recent years are:-

    • Self-assessment and career progression
    • Managing your health at work
    • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
    • Developing carpentry skills
    • Working safely in engineering
    • Customer service in travel and tourism
    • Research a tourist destination
    • Creating activities for children
    • Health and social care needs
    • Learning from a work placement

    Throughout the two years the students the compile a portfolio of evidence to reinforce the practical elements of their learning. These will be assessed throughout the two years.

    Other Information

    This is a very practical course with a variety of trips to workplaces and outside speakers that come into speak to the students. They will also visit Cambridge Regional College and the College of West Anglia. For most of the lessons students will have access to computers. There will be occasional homework tasks set.

    As part of the course students will complete the health and safety in the workplace qualification at Entry level with the British Safety Council.
